Rev. James Paul Mayfield – Bedford
Rev. James Paul Mayfield, 86, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.
Born June 13, 1927, in Georgetown, he was the son of Thomas Franklin and Nancy Pearl (Wilson) Mayfield. He married Wilma Lynn Sharp March 14, 1953.
He graduated from Georgetown High School in 1946, and was also a graduate of Asbury College. He served as pastor of 25 churches in the Southern Indiana District of the United Methodist Church. He had been a member of Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM and was Past Master of the Brazil Masonic Lodge No. 264 F&AM.
He belonged to the York Rite, Order of Purple Cross and York Cross of Honor, Indianapolis White Shrine, and was a former member of the Mitchell Rotary Club. He was a U. S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post No. 250.
Surviving: wife of 61 years, Wilma Mayfield, Mitchell; daughters, Margaret Pearl Shorter, Brazil Rebecca Lynn Proffitt, Mitchell, Paula Marie Kerilein, Vass, North Carolina; grandchildren, James Robert Goodpasture, Cynthia Lucille Amos, John Davis Kreilein III, Raymond Paul Shorter, Angela Dawn Proffitt, Jeremy Sean Proffitt; great grandchildren, Matthew Shane Gooddpasture, Britney Nicole Goodpasture, Shay-Lynn Annette Beard, Shane Hunter Beard, Jacob Alan Amos, Elijiah Sean Proffitt, Silas Israel Proffitt, Nikah E’Layne Sinclair, Johnathon Kreilein, Melady Kreilein; brother, Lawrence Monroe Mayfield, New Albany,
His parents; son, Everett Mayfield; and siblings, Chester Louis Mayfield, Clarence Edward Mayfield, Sr., Harlan Francis Mayfield, Lillian Esther Wolfe, Edna Lucille Crawford, and Margaret Odessa Lawrence, preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church with Reverend Eric Kersey and Past District Superintendent Tom True officiating. Military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107 will precede the service. Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center and from 1:30 p.m. until the service on Sunday at the church. Graveside service will be at Mt. Zion United Methodist Cemetery in Lanesville on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
