Stanley Joe Fulkerson – Bedford
Stanley Joe Fulkerson, 65 of Bedford, passed away at 7:45 pm on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at I.U. Health Hospice House.
Born July 1, 1948 in Kansas, IL, he was the son of John Oren and Vona Marie (Richey) Fulkerson. He graduated from Fountain Central High School with the class of 1966. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1967 to 1971 on the USS Chilton and USS Rockbridge, mostly in the Mediterranean Sea. He also took part in shore support during the Vietnam War. He married the love of his life, Kathy D. Krout on January 22, 1970 and she survives. Stan retired in 2010 after thirty-eight years of dedicated service with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Fish and Wildlife, serving as Property Manager at Williams Dam Public Fishing Area. Along with his assignment of overseeing and maintaining the property, Stan also had many other assignments statewide with the Fish and Wildlife Division and also worked directly with other divisions within the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. One division he was very fond of and through which many friendships developed was working with the Law Enforcement Division. In 1998, during a River Rescue Team exercise at Williams Dam, he assisted in executing the rescue of four Indiana Conservation Officers, one of whom was fatally wounded, F. Sgt. Karl Kelley, a fellow River Rescue Team member and friend. Stan received the IDNR Law Enforcement Division’s “Award for Heroism” for his actions taken that dreadful day.
Stan loved his family and loved life. He really enjoyed his four grandchildren. He loved people and learning and sharing what he knew. He had a deep passion for the woods, water and outdoors. He educated many people in all areas of hunting, fishing, trapping and conservation. He loved to hunt and fish with family and friends. He truly enjoyed showing and teaching people how to hunt and fish for their first time and seeing their success. Stan enjoyed collecting, and was an educator, locally, in Indian artifacts and woodworking. He attended Crossroads Community Church.
Surviving with his wife of forty-four years, Kathy D. Krout-Fulkerson of Bedford are a son, B.J. Fulkerson and wife, Christa (Herr) and their children, Grace and Gabe Fulkerson; a daughter, April (Fulkerson) Lane and husband, Tom and their children, Cameron and Clairann Lane.
