Jayne Poore Ripley, 82, passed away on November 12, 2013 with her family by her side.
Jayne was an energetic woman who dedicated her life to literacy, children and social change through her career in education. Born in 1931 in Evanston, Illinois, Jayne graduated high school in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at the age of 16 and went on to pursue a B.A. in psychology and, later, a Master’s degree in Childhood Education at the University of Arkansas. She received a Reading Specialist Certification from Indiana University in 1979.
Jayne worked as a reading teacher in Mitchell Community Schools from 1970 until she retired in 1995. Actively involved in the community, Jayne was the discussion leader for the “Junior Great Books” club, president of the board for the Bedford Little Theater, an activist for the Citizens for Better Environment, a member of the International Reading Association, and the recording secretary for the R.E.A.D. council. She was listed in Who’s Who of American Women in 1987. Jayne was also an active member of First Presbyterian church in Bedford.
Jayne is survived by four sons, Mark, Trent (Karen), Kirk (Ruanne) and Paul. She is also survived by her two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, who are grateful to have spent time growing up and learning from their sweet, “kooky” grandma.
She is preceded in death by her husband, William Lee Ripley, and parents, Earl Yates Poore and Mabel Ransom Poore.
While Jayne loved many things including cooking, visiting the art museum and spending time with her sons, she was the most passionate about inspiring a love of reading within each and every one of her students.
If you were once a student of Ms. Ripley’s, the family encourages you to send stories, anecdotes or memories of her classroom to the following address: 10380 Golden Bear Way, Noblesville Indiana 46060.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Bedford Public Library or Burris Elementary School in Mitchell, so that her legacy of spreading literacy can continue.
Donations could also be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Bloomington Hospice, or the Johnson Christian Village.
A private memorial service is planned.
