Katie Cheek Wininger – Avoca
Katie Cheek Wininger, 91, of Avoca, died at 11:50 am on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at Garden Villa in Bedford.
Born April 11, 1922 in Laurel Co., KY, she was the daughter of Ed and Mary (Bennett) Gross. She married Rannel Cheek, Sr. and he preceded her in death in 1987. She later married Zenis (Doc) Wininger and he died in 2000. She was a cook at the Indiana Laborers Training Institute. She had worked as an LPN at the Oolitic Nursing Home and as a cook at Ruffo’s in Oolitic and at Central Foundry. She had also worked at Essex and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include her children, Rannel Cheek, Jr. and wife Wilma, of Fayetteville, Joyce Henderson and husband Bill, of Oolitic, Glinda Terrell and husband Tony and Christina Chapman and husband Kevin, all of Bedford, Vestal Cheek, of Mitchell, Leatrice “Att” Meadows and husband Paul of Judah; two step-daughters, Joann Wray, of Bedford and Marilyn Wininger , of Millersburg; one step-son, Harlen Wininger ,of Port St. Lucy, FL; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; a sister, Lucy Collins, of Needmore; a brother Thea Gross, of London, KY; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands; a daughter Mary Cheek; two step-sons, Harold and Morris Wininger; a great granddaughter, five brothers, one sister.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 am on Monday, November 18th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastors Glenn Duncan and Bill McKee officiating. Burial will follow in Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca. Visitation will be from 3 pm to 8 pm on Sunday, November 17th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
