Daisy Meehan – Mitchell
Daisy Meehan, 87, passed away at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Medco Health & Rehabilitation Center in French Lick.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Haverly Funeral Chapel & Cremation.
Ruth Virginia Chastain – Mitchell
Ruth Virginia Chastain, 96, of Mitchell, passed away at 6:15 am Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.
Born June 13, 1916 in Mitchell she was the daughter of Lingle and Nora (Terry) Barnett. She married Robert Chastain April 28, 1937 and he preceded her in death June 7 1998.
She worked as a cook at Ted’s Drive-In and Golden Gables and was a member of Mitchell Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include daughters Rita Clampitt, of Mitchell, Rea Dawn and husband Gale Hunt, of Salem; adopted daughter Molly Sawyer, of North Carolina; daughter-in-law Sharon Chastain, Kalamazoo, Michigan; 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Ronald; daughter, Ruth Ann Kelly; sister, Eldena Gabbert and brothers Menlo, Lester and Danny Barnett.
Funeral services will be at 1 pm Friday, March 22, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Rev. Steve Jones officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 pm to 8 pm Thursday and Noon until the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Melvin “Dick” Staggs Sr. – Bedford
Melvin “Dick” Staggs, Sr., 76, of Bedford, passed away at 9:05 pm on Monday, March 18, 2013 at the White River Lodge in Bedford.
Born January 19, 1937 in Lawrence Co., he was the son of Alfred Harrison and Josephine Edith (Oliver) Staggs. He married Shirley Allen on June 15, 1959 and she survives. He was a plaster and drywall contractor retiring in 2003.He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of Crossroads Community Church, V.F.W. #9107, Gillen Post #33 American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed squirrel and ginsing hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of Bedford; two daughters, Robin Green and husband, Dan, Sarah Jeanette White and husband, Robert, all of Bedford; two sons Jesse Staggs and wife, Blanche and Melvin Harrison Staggs, Jr., all of Bedford; grandchildren, Clayton and Dustin Staggs, Brittany and Ashley Green, Ronnie and Robin White Brandon, Shanna and Jessa Staggs; thirteen great grandchildren; five sisters, Janie Worley of Oklahoma, Mary Beth Copeland and husband, Larry, of Arizona, Kathy Howell, of Linton and Helen Killion; two brothers, Terry J. Staggs and wife, Christine, of Indianapolis and Kenny Staggs, of Linton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Walter Eugene Staggs; four brothers, Doug,Fred, Gerald and Alfred Wayne Staggs; a sister, Melvina Hestand.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 am on Friday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Dustin Staggs officiating. Burial will follow in White River Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm on Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
