Ralph A. Kern – St. Louis, MO
Ralph A. Kern, 79, of St. Louis, MO, formerly of Washington, passed away on June 6, 2012 at St. Louis University Hospital. He had resided the past five years at the Dalmar Gardens Nursing Home in St. Louis. Born December 1, 1932 in Martin County, he was the son of Alton and Lillian (Bauer) Kern.
Upon graduation from Shoals High School in 1950, he served in the US Air Force in Korea. He retired in 1992 as Manager of National Gypsum. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church Dubois Crossroads, Washington American Legion Post 121. Washington Indiana Moose Lodge 1080, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 414 Washington and Cissell-Jackman VFW Post 332 Washington.
He is survived by two sons Mark and Scott Kerns, both of St. Charles, MO; one daughter Tamela Leaver, of Baldwin, MO; one brother Clarence Kern, of Mitchell; three sisters Betty Crays, of French Lick, Phyllis Wininger, and Mary Rose Risner, both of Crawfordsville; eight grandsons; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother John Walter Kerns.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, June 18, 2012 at the Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. until the hour of service at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery Dubois Crossroads. Shoals American Legion Post 61 will conduct military graveside rites with Pastor Mary Poston officiating.
Debra “Debbie” A. Hawkins – Bedford
Debra “Debbie” A. Hawkins, 57, of Bedford, passed away at 7:34 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2012 after a 25 year battle with a brain tumor. She was born July 5, 1954 to George and Louise (Short) Brown. On December 12, 1971 she married Jerry Hawkins and he survives. Debbie was a member at Dive Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry; two daughters, Missy Brown and husband Stacey, Mindy Bugh, both of Bedford; four grandchildren, Jordan Snow, Taylor, Clayton and Dalton Brown; one sister, Becky Taylor and husband Greg, of Bedford; one brother Kevin Brown and wife Ruth, of Campbellsburg; step-brother David Whalen; her mother and step-father, Louise and David Whalen, all of Bedford.
She was preceded in death by her father, George Brown.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Dive Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her nephews Justin Pogue, Ryan Taylor, Heath Hawkins and her grandsons Taylor, Clayton and Dalton Brown. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 and from 11 a.m. until the hour of service on Wednesday, at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to either the Dive Christian Church Family Life Center or Dive Christian Church Preschool.

Mary Jane Kanis Pace – Bedford
Mary Jane Kanis Pace, 71, of Bedford, passed away at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Garden Villa due to complications from a lengthy illness. She was born on July 13, 1940 in Indianapolis. She married Roy E. Pace on December 27, 1958 and he survives. She retired from Ford-Visteon after 18 years. She was a member for over 40 years at Faith Mission Church. She was a loving wife and mother.
Survivors include her husband, Roy, of Bedford; three sons, Jeffrey Pace and wife Bonnie, of Clarksville, MD, Karl Pace, of Bellefontaine, OH, Kevin Pace and wife Wandajoe, of Bedford; 8 grandchildren, Lucas E. Pace, Carly D. Pace, Chelsea M. Pace, Misty Daniels, Chad R. Pace, Chris Daniels, Jacob A. Pace, Kentlee Root and one great grandchild, Ray Moody; a sister, Florence White, of Florida; one brother Charles White, of Florida; close family friend, Wilma and Rick Root, and Sharon Blaize.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at Faith Mission Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Faith Mission Church with Pastor Steven E. Hight officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery.

Mary P. Morgan – Bedford
Mary P. Morgan, 85, of Bedford, passed away at 3:15 a.m. on June 17, 2012 at Stonebridge Health Campus. She was born on October 8, 1926 in Lawrence County to Richard and Pauline “Lena” (Weinman) Lantz. Mary first married Edward “Butch” Herthel and he preceded her in death in December of 1977. She then married Robert Morgan and he preceded her in death in December of 2011. She retired as a supervisor from Indiana Bell in 1989. Mary was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church and the Pioneer Telephone Club.
She is survived by three nieces, Sally Bullock and husband Jim, of Oolitic, Sherry Underwood, of Bedford, Judy Kennedy, of Corydon; five great nephews, Jim Underwood and wife Debbie of Springville, John Underwood, of Bedford, Mike Bullock and wife Denise, of Brownsburg, Mark Bullock and wife Rita of Brownsburg, Kevin Bullock and wife Kathleen, of Oolitic and three great nieces, Judy Underwood, of Indianapolis, Jane Root and husband Larry, of Mitchell, JoAnn Underwood, of Bedford; and one daughter-in-law Joann Herthel, of Indianapolis.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and one half-sister Minnie Drehobl and a son-in-law Charles Herthel.
A funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church with Father Rick Eldred officiating. Entombment will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be John Underwood, Larry Root, Mike Bullock, Mark Bullock and Kevin Bullock. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the Day & Carter Mortuary with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church.

Marguerite Lucille Stevens – Kansas City, MO
Marguerite Lucille Stevens, 97, a lifetime resident of Bedford, IN, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at her home in Kansas City, MO. She was born on February 13, 1915, to Clara Jeneva “Jane” (Johnson) and Michael S. New in Bloomfield.
Marguerite was united in marriage to Kenneth Bayard Stevens on November 28, 1942, in Lexington, KY. She was the owner and operator of the Bedford Beauty Shop for 66 years, retiring in 1997.
She was preceded in death by her husband; both parents; and her siblings, Curtis New, Mildred L. Hardin, Opal Reed, Goldie Christy, Ernest New, Elmer New, Gilbert New, Charles New and Dallas New. Survivors include her daughter, Reita Mann of Kansas City (North), MO; and sons, Mark Stevens and wife, Darlene of Spencer, Randy Stevens and wife, Jackie of Parkville, MO, and stepson, Reese Stevens and wife, Janice of Marengo; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2012, at Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford, with Pastor Raymond New officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Crossroads Methodist Church in Bloomington. Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Versie A. Cody – Orleans

Versie A. Cody, 90, of Orleans, passed away at 7 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2012, at her home.
Born July 7, 1921, in Tazewell, Tennessee, she was the daughter of Alfred Elvin and Martha Almira (Brown) Yeary. She married Andrew Schultz “Andy” Cody December 20, 1939, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, and he preceded her in death March 25, 1994. She was a Christian lady who farmed beside her husband. Versie was a talented quilt maker and a member of the Spring Mill Stitchers.
Survivors include her sons, Erwin Leon Cody, of Orleans, Kenneth Steve Cody and wife Rose, of Orleans; brother, Lee Yeary, of South Charleston, Ohio; sister, Magdalene Thomas, of Hamilton, Ohio; grandchildren, Cindy Gillespie, Sarah Cody, and Susan Cody; 8 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Kermit Yeary, Morgan Yeary, Joseph Yeary, and infant Earnest Yeary; and sisters, Reecie Clarkson and Lillie Ausmus.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 Wednesday, June 20, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Bro. Robert Yeary officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Beatrice Mae “Aunt Bea” Neal – Mitchell
Beatrice Mae “Aunt Bea” Neal, 91, of Mitchell passed away at 9 p.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012, at her home.
Born August 19, 1920, in Orleans, she was the daughter of Frank and Dora (Wilson) Hunter. She married Charles Neal February 24, 1940, and he preceded her in death April 30, 1989.
She had clerked at Barlow’s Grocery and worked at the election polls. Bea was a member of Tulip Street Christian Church.
Survivors include her siblings, Don Hunter and wife Janice, of Lafayette, Dean Hunter and wife Ilene, of Audobon, Charles Lee Hunter and wife Peggy, of Talladega, Alabama, Max Hunter and wife Doris, of Lafayette, Carol Williams and husband George, of Scottsburg, Geraldine Barrett and husband Walter Barrett, of London, Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Frank Hunter, Jr., Robert Hunter, James Hunter, and Carl Hunter; and sisters, Juanita Bennett and Maxine Gray.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Bro. Darrin Chastain officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
