The following obituaries were received for Monday –


Merlin King – Mitchell
Merlin E. King, 79, of Mitchell, passed away at 12:58 a.m. Sunday, January 22, 2012, at IU Health Bedford Hospital.
Born January 21, 1933, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Ralph and Mary Lucille (Owen) King. He married Cheryl Ann (Bough) Kelsey October 21, 1983, and she preceded him in death October 28, 2011.
Merlin was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of American Legion Post No. 250, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. He retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center – Crane. He was a member of Bride of Christ Fellowship, Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM, and a graduate of Huron High School in 1951.
Survivors include his children: Ryan Eric and his wife Melanie King, of Bedford, Jolene and her husband Claude Rayhill Jr., of Mitchell; stepchildren, Jacquelyn and her husband John Cleek, of Mitchell, Dana King, of Mitchell, Aaron and his wife Jamie Kelsey, of Madison; brother, Herman and his wife Linda King, of Mitchell; 20 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and daughter, Doris Evelyn Hill.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Allen officiating. Entombment will be at Cresthaven Memory Gardens with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.
Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

William Edward “Eddie” Smith – Bedford
William Edward “Eddie” Smith, 74, of Bedford, passed away at 4:05 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2012 at Stonebridge Health Campus.
Born December 17, 1937 in Columbus, Ind., he was the son of Paul A. and Dorothy (Rosenburger) Smith. He married Gail R. Myers on July 20, 1958 and she survives. He retired in 2002 after 26 years as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a 1956 graduate of Bedford High School and had attended Indiana University, for two years. He was a member of Hillcrest Christian Church, an avid football and baseball player and was one of the founding members of the Bedford Girl’s Club.
Survivors include his wife Gail, of Bedford; two daughters, Lynn and her husband Daniel Board, of Indianapolis, Kim and her husband Doug Hornback, of Louisville; four grandchildren, Michael and his wife Allyson Forsyth, of CT, Jennifer Forsyth, of Louisville, Austyn Board and his fiancé Jay Arnos, of Indianapolis, Cole Board, of Indianapolis, one great grandchild, Matthew Forsyth; one brother P.J. and his wife Eva Smith, of TN; one sister, Peggy Staley, of Bedford; one brother-in-law, Johnny and his wife Phyllis Myers, of Bedford and several nieces, nephew and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 10:30 a.m.at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Pastor Mark Fugate and Charlie Scott officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, in Brownstown. Friends may call on Monday from 4 -8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be considered to the Bedford Girls’ Club or Hillcrest Christian Church.
